Why Go to Church?
A question asked today more often than it used to be is:
Why go to church?
First, as followers of Christ we are the church. So, a better question would be, why should we gather as the church? Two simple reasons:
to connect with God
and to build community with other people.
Some think it is easier and takes less time to stay home and watch an online service. When confronted, some may say they have grown beyond the need for in-person worship at a local congregation, claiming they get as much or more out of watching a service online.
But we must remember God’s word in Hebrews 10:24-25: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
As Hebrews 10:24-25 expresses, there is activity when the church, the body of Christ, gathers together that makes a difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Here are some reasons to gather in person (go to church):
• We are built up.
In a world that tries over and again to tear us down, when we gather together we can encourage others in word and deed. We can be encouraged. And we find accountability in a safe place. You may think, but it’s not the best thing I experience every week. Think of it this way, you may leave the dinner table disappointed that the meal was not as tasty as you thought it should be, but somehow the digested food nourishes your body. The same is true when you regularly gather (attend) with other believers and are fed the Word of God in person.
• It provides an opportunity for each of us to serve others.
When you attend the gathering of the church, you learn about the needs of Christian brothers and sisters and are motivated to minister to them and pray for them. It’s not all about you.
• It quietly testifies to the lost.
When your neighbors see you headed for church, they know where you are going. When the golfer drives by the church building on Sunday morning and sees the cars in the parking lot, he is reminded of where he should be. Church attendance slowly and quietly testifies to the world who’s you are.
• It provides a natural evangelistic opportunity.
You have a natural venue to invite lost people to join you and learn about Christ. It is amazing how much more edifying a church service and Bible study becomes when someone who does not know the Lord sits by your side.
• It provides a safe place to ask questions, learn, and grow in the faith.
• It encourages other believers. Just attending church spurs others on toward love and good deeds.
• One final reason we need to attend the gathering of the church regularly: God commands it.
The gathering of the Church provides a dedicated time for worship, spiritual growth through Bible teaching, and mutual encouragement. For many, it is both a spiritual discipline and a way to support others by putting their faith into action.
While spiritual practices can happen anywhere, the gathering of the family of God is an essential part of the faith. See you Sunday!
