The Seven Last Words of Jesus

A Reflection on the Cross

As Jesus hung on the cross, He spoke seven powerful statements that reveal His heart, His mission, and His love for us. These final words are not just phrases from history - they hold deep meaning for our faith today. They show His forgiveness, His sacrifice, and His victory over sin and death.

Jesus’ death was the ultimate act of grace and redemption. Through His sacrifice, we are offered salvation, not by our own works, but by faith in Him alone. As we reflect on these last words, may they remind us of the hope and assurance we have in Christ.

Forgiveness

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” – Luke 23:34

Devotional: Even in His suffering, Jesus extended forgiveness to those who crucified Him. This reminds us that His grace is greater than our sin. No matter what we have done, His love is ready to cover us. Today, take a moment to reflect - who do you need to forgive? Ask God to help you extend the same grace He has given you.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your boundless forgiveness. Help me to forgive others as You have forgiven me.

Salvation

“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." – Luke 23:43

Devotional: A criminal hanging beside Jesus recognized Him as Lord and asked to be remembered. Jesus’ response was immediate - salvation is by faith, not by works. No one is too far gone for God’s grace. If you’ve ever doubted your salvation, remember that it’s not about what you’ve done but about what Christ has done for you.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the gift of salvation. Help me trust in Your finished work, not my own efforts.

Compassion

“Woman, here is your son . . . Here is your mother.” – John 19:26-27

Devotional: Even in His final moments, Jesus cared for His mother, ensuring she was not left alone. This reminds us that Jesus sees our needs, big and small. In our own suffering, He remains compassionate and faithful. Who in your life needs to experience God’s love through your care today?

Prayer: Lord, give me a heart of compassion to care for those around me, just as You cared for others even in Your suffering.

Abandonment

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” – Mark 15:34

Devotional: At this moment, Jesus bore the full weight of our sin, feeling separation from the Father so that we never would. If you’ve ever felt abandoned or distant from God, know that Jesus understands. But because of the cross, we can confidently draw near to Him.

Prayer: Father, when I feel alone, remind me that Jesus endured separation so that I could have eternal closeness with You.

Distress

I am thirsty.” – John 19:28

Devotional: Jesus, the Living Water, experienced thirst so that we might never be spiritually thirsty again. His suffering was real, showing His full humanity. When life leaves you dry and weary, turn to Him - He alone can satisfy your soul.

Prayer: Lord, quench my spiritual thirst with Your presence. Help me to seek You as my true source of life.

Completion

It is finished.” – John 19:30

Devotional: These are not words of defeat but of victory! Jesus fully paid the price for our sin - there is nothing left for us to add. We can rest in the finished work of the cross. What are you trying to "earn" today that Jesus has already secured for you?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for finishing the work of salvation. Help me to rest in Your grace, knowing that I am fully redeemed in You.

Surrender

Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” – Luke 23:46

Devotional: Jesus willingly surrendered His spirit to the Father, trusting Him completely. Our call is the same - to release control and trust God fully. What area of your life do you need to surrender to Him today?

Prayer: Father, I place my life in Your hands. Help me to trust You with every part of my journey, just as Jesus did.

Easter Resurrection Eggs

Resurrection Eggs are a hands-on illustration to teach the Easter story to children. We encourage you to use this tool the 12 days leading up to Easter (Resurrection Day). Each day there is an egg with an item in it to represent a part of the Easter story.

Helpful Hints

  • Each day have a child open an egg and tell you what’s inside.

  • Make sure the eggs are opened in order.

  • Read the scripture assigned to that item or have the child read it.

  • Explain what the scripture means in the Easter story.

  • Be sure to keep the lesson brief.
